Joaquin Serrato, Multimedia and Sports Editor

Joaquin Serrato is a junior at San Juan Hills High School and this is his second year at The Express. He has ambitions to develop the sports section of newspaper Joaquin is often seen holding a camera on the Stallion Football sideline under the Friday night lights. His hobbies consist of watching sports, playing pickup basketball, and relaxing at home. Joaquin plans to attend a four-year university and has dreams of being a play-by-play sports commentator.

Aiden Briggs (12) leads a team in preparing the theater for Crazy For You. Brigg’s title is Technical Director who plays a great role behind the scenes in setting up and making the theater look professional for performances.

Shohei Ohtani’s name is written in traditional Japanese kanji which takes the palace of the iconic Dodgers cursive word logo. Instead of a baseball at the top of the logo, a dollar sign is there to symbolize alleged gambling.

The Human Rights Force presents Lambert Lo as their guest speaker. Lo is part of a project that dignifies unhoused people by having upscale dinner gatherings known as Kings Table. The most basic human right that Lo exemplified was the right to have food.

Guard Anna Shreeve (11) shoots a jump shot in the key, scoring for the Stallions. In the first quarter of San Juan Hills’ game against rival San Clemente, the Stallions held a lead of up to 10 points at times. The Stallions ultimately win 66-48 and go on to tie with San Clemente for first place in the Sea View League. San Juan Hills ultimately made it to the second round of CIF.

Gwyneth Lyon (10) hits the lip in the Capistrano Coast Surfing League Finals. She competed and won first place in both shortboard and longboard competitions. Lyon credits her mindset and encouragement for contributing to her victory. “I won by staying focused and having fun in great conditions. Also having the San Juan surf team support me as I surf was a huge motivation.”

Quarterback Timmy Herr is in his throwing motion, targeting a receiver to his left in a CIF-Semi Final game. This season was Herr’s first at SJHHS. The lefty quarterback liked the welcoming environment at San Juan Hills. “A good thing that stood out is [that] right when I got here, everyone treated me as family. I just got welcomed in by the coaches and the players right away. It was easy to build a bond with the team and the coaches,” said Herr.

Member of the No Place For Hate organization, Paige Barclay (12) holds the Unity Week schedule, which shows the various topics like mental health, multiculturalism, gender diversity, immigration, and ableism that will be presented throughout the week. This year, members worked collaboratively towards the common goal of making a positive difference in their community. “It took a lot of creativity, a lot of teenwork, just a lot of little details that had to go into it to be perfect. A lot of things like the titles, theres a lot of key terms, a lot of communication with the principal, as well as with the guest speaker, said No Place For Hate Adviser Fernanda Villalba. I would hope that other people would still want to learn about other people on campus and their perspective and reality and how to just understand them better.

 Dan Baughman (12) and his teammates spectate a home league game agaisnt Trabuco Hills on the home bench. The San Juan Hills Boys basketball season came to a close after a close CIF playoff loss against Crean Lutheran High School. This year the Stallion boys were placed in Division 1 playoffs, which was a step up in competition from last year, according to Weston Port (10). “Our season had a lot of ups and downs but we had a lot of fun,” Baughman said. The players fostered strong bonds during this season. “I had fun working with Brody Averall (12). We helped each other a lot during practices” Baughman accredits his successful season to his coach and family, as they showed their support for him on and off the court.
