Marching Band, the life of that party at football games. During games, the marching band gets everyone involved, encouraging them to have fun and help cheer on the team.

Marching Band is made up of students from both the school band and orchestra classes, taught by Music Director, Dean McElroy (Mak-UHL-Roy). Marching Band is a 7th period on students’ schedules and counts as a P.E. credit, due to the many after school practices and physical activity. Marching band is the fun part of it, where people can go to a football game, yell crazy and be loud. They are able to play music that is more popular and current and in an exciting way.

For music students, marching band is a way to have fun and play an instrument with more freedom than concerts demand. “It complements our concert groups. It’s where people spend time outside of school together, they have friends, so there’s a big social aspect of it,” said McElroy. “Marching band is the fun part of it, where people can go to a football game, yell crazy and be loud. This year was difficult for the marching band because there were only three home games. With how quickly the football season began this year, there was hardly any time to practice for the first show. Then there was homecoming where ASB performed during the Halftime show without the marching band, therefore leaving them with only one last show to play for.

“It puts a little pressure on us because, it’s like here you go, here is your whole show in one shot,” said McElroy.

Despite the hardships, when the game is over and their performance is complete, the students are proud of what they have accomplished. “I hope they come off the field feeling accomplished from all of that hard work they did,” said McElroy.

Friday, October 28th is San Juan Hill’s last home game and it is a pink out. Next time, let’s encourage our marching band by keeping the whole stadium energized, excited, and loud. Always show your school spirit and make sure to Ride For the Band.
