Safety Gemma Goldman (9) leaps up for the ball in their game against Mater Dei. The play ended up resulting in a pick six. They won the game 12-6, which made Goldman’s touchdown crucial in the winning effort.

The SJHHS Girls Flag Football team put in long hours throughout their fall season to make sure they had the best outcome possible. Not only did they win numerous games, but they created unimaginable relationships with their teammates that formed a family. This family will stay together throughout their entire high school experience.

“My favorite thing about being part of the flag football team is the friendships I’ve made through it and the life lessons you learn from being a part of a family,” said flag football player Gwyn Lyon.

Every team is met with challenges that must be improved upon. The team met this with lots of positivity and determination.

“Some things that we did great were lifting each other up and never giving up. Throughout everything we do we should put the energy and effort in what we want to accomplish. Some things that we could improve on from the season was to fix the tiny problems our coaches told us so that we could better increase our winning percentage,” said Lyon.

Girls flag football is a sport with a great level of rarity, as it is only recently a CIF sanctioned sport. Even though that is the case, many players say that the sport is absolutely amazing.

“I would definitely do it all again because it was such a cool opportunity and the sport is super fun and different from any sport I’ve played before. It also opened up a lot of new opportunities for the future,” said player Cailyn Hill.

Over the course of a season, a team can have a lot of growth both on and off the field. This is definitely the case for the Flag Football team. They have grown and evolved tremendously as a team by the end of the season.

“Over the course of the season the team has improved by being more confident in everything we do on and off the field. While also not being scared to fail but to take what we did and improve on it,” said Lyon.

This was the flag football team’s first year together because this year is the sport’s first CIF sanctioned season. As a brand new team, they met many challenges throughout the season. Head coach Chad Hogancamp meets these challenges with positivity and competition, and a forward thinking mindset.

“As a coaching staff we tried things, learned things, made miscalculations, and a few times we even managed to do a few things right! The most important thing is that our players competed from the first day of summer camp until the last game of the season. There were many bright spots, big wins, big plays, as well as disappointing losses. Overall I think we can agree that we did not win as many games as we would have liked, but we were an extremely young team compared to others,” said Hogancamp.

The Girls Flag Football team had an amazing first season being CIF and overcame many obstacles to become the strong team they are. This year was a great start to their flag football career.

The Flag Football team will be back in March to play in a spring league season hosted by ML Flag.
