Your Voice in Student Government

ASB elections are happening today as nominees make their pitches to students. Understand the process and importance of electing your next student leaders.

Posters line the walls of campus buildings as student candidates for ASB and other positions prepare for the upcoming elections. Several students run for the position of ASB President, hoping to have a positive impact on the school’s culture as they take the mantle.

The Associated Student Body (ASB) President is in charge of all Student Government functions and will attend and represent SJHHS at all school, inter-school, and ASB sponsored events while acting as a responsible leader. They are tasked with several duties that include maintaining order among the ASB cabinet, attending all Student Representative meetings, working with the Activities Director to improve the quality of students life at San Juan Hills, and much more.

ASB Presidents will work alongside the ASB Vice President who will also attend all Student Representative meetings and will essentially assist the ASB President through any necessary means to help address student concerns and enhance students school life.

Monday, March 10th is when candidates started their campaigns by hanging posters, handing out flyers and shirts, and uploading a required minute long video of who they are and why they should be elected. Currently, the candidates are posting on their instagram pages to introduce and promote themselves to the school.

ASB elections are significant because they will determine the representatives of our school who are tasked with the responsibility for organizing school related events, voicing all students’ opinions or concerns, and promoting school spirit.

Students will be able to vote for their desired candidate on Wednesday, March 12, through a Google form located on the Canvas website. After the votes are all accounted for, the elected winners will be announced.

ASB elections decide the student representatives who will influence student school experience and enact positive changes within their school. It is vital for students to understand the structure and process that goes on during elections so that students can be confident in the candidate they believe will uphold their values and strive to improve the school environment.

2025 ASB President Candidates

Lacy Duckwitz is motivated to listen and help students. She hopes that if elected, she will become a voice for the students and bring back the lack of spirit. Duckwitz is willing to take on the tough tasks because she feels fulfilled and knows that she is contributing to something important. (Victoria Hernandez)

Lacy Duckwitz (11) has created her Instagram account @lacyduck4asbprez in which she shares funny photos to connect with students and has been handing out rubber ducks with her account underneath as a way to playfully pun on her last name. “I am always willing to listen and do the jobs that others consider 'boring' because I find accomplishment in knowing that I’m doing something important. I hope to bring back the lack of spirit and be a voice for the students and become a representative for those who feel unheard. This is something I have always wanted to do because while I always enjoyed doing stuff behind the scenes, I feel like this is my chance to put myself out there while also getting to do what I love, which is serving the students,” said Duckwitz.

Hailey Palmer (11) is very experienced and has been involved in ASB for the last three years in high school and two years in middle school. She is running alongside Emma Owens who is competing for ASB Vice President and has created an Instagram account @vote.hailey.emma, and has created T-Shirts for teachers to wear around school, hung posters, and created her video inspired by Elle Woods from Legally Blonde. “I love being a part of ASB and what we have been able to do for all the students. Learning from all past presidents, I have been able to form my own way of leadership and picture what ASB can have the potential to be, and want to change ASB from within to create more of a community to help the school overall. I want to expand the people who lead our student section and get people from outside of ASB to make a better experience for everyone,” said Palmer.

Jack Roche is eager to hear the results of the ASB elections. Roche is very dedicated, responsible, and spirited, and hopes that if elected, he is able to promote inclusivity and encourage student participation in school related events so students feel that there is a crowd always there to cheer them on. Jack Roche (11) is currently Junior Class President and has been involved in ASB since fourth grade. He has worked on his Instagram account, @jackrocheasbprez, to generate engagement and has passed out sunglasses and posters around campus. He is involved in additional extracurricular activities such as Cross Country, Track and Field, Theater, and No Place for Hate. “Ever since I came to San Juan Hills, I love the vast amount of quality programs and I hope that if I am elected, I will be able to increase the participation in these programs. I feel as if the spirit is low, especially at Basketball games, but there are a lot of promising ways to get people excited through an increase in events during break and lunch,” said Roche.

Gavin Geiss hopes to be elected ASB President and hear his fellow peers and interact with them through conversations to gain feedback that will be carried out to advance the school. Geiss hopes to make school enjoyable and bring everyone together through pep rallies and games so all students are engaged and unified. (Victoria Hernandez)

Gavin Geiss (11) is very involved in his community by volunteering in food drives and many events held at San Clemente, the current president of Young Life, a part of Student Council, has led multiple bible studies, and is on the San Juan Hills Football team. He has also created an Instagram to promote himself which is @ggeiss_for_president. “I feel that I am definitely a people's president and would not change myself if elected. I believe getting feedback is super important in being an ASB president so you are aware of everyone's different wants and needs to create a thriving school community. I want to make school a place for students to look forward to and be inspired from, and essentially make a massive impact on the school and unite students,” said Geiss.

Victoria is currently a junior at San Juan Hills. She is passionate in sports, photography, and cooking. At San Juan Hills she plays soccer and lacrosse, and continues to pursue soccer in club. A fun fact is that she fractured her arm when she was three and ran a marathon when she was thirteen. She lives in San Juan and has a family of six with three younger brothers. In her free time, she loves to watch videos about news and occasionally writes, which inspired her to join the newspaper. Even though this is her first year on the staff, she is excited and ready for what’s to come. Victoria can adapt to different situations and environments, and is always curious and determined. This year, she wants to enhance her writing skills and explore the world of journalism. In the Express, she would love to write sport stories and opinion writing.

Elliott Ruvalcaba is a San Juan Hills High School senior and first-time member of The Express staff this year. He joined The Express to further his writing skills and engage deeper with his connection to the community on campus, hoping to write about a wide array of topics. Elliott greatly enjoys studying history and literature, hoping to study both at a greater level in college. He likes listening to a broad range of music and is serving as the president of the Alternative Music Club this year. Outside of school, he enjoys reading and film, some of his favorite books are Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and a couple of his favorite films are Akira Kurosawa’s Ikiru and Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing.
