The SJHHS surf team recently won the Men’s Longboard Championship for 11th time in school history and the Women’s Longboard Championship for the 4th time. Along with major victories for the Individual Divisions, Stallions made their way to 4th overall in the state for men’s long board by Gage Schroeter (12) and Gwyn Lyon (12) 4th for women’s shortboard, as well as 3rd for women’s longboard. This event took place last month, on March 21-23 of 2026.
Lyon took home the trophy for this year’s women’s division and was additionally awarded the Sportsmanship award by Tom Gibbins – founding director of the Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum and of the USA Surfing Federation – for strongly representing Stallion athletics. Out of 6, beating opponents from Soquel, Coastal Academy, San Dieguito, and Point Loma. Although she had recovered from a major face reconstructive surgery recently, the procedure did not stop her from being a Scholastic Surf State Champion of 2026.
“The team has brought me to be a better surfer because the atmosphere is very fun and lively,” said Varsity athlete Grace Frank (10).
Frank has been a member of the Varsity Surf team for two years, and has had multiple victories throughout her time on the team. She has achieved an “athlete of the month” award for the Stallions this year and is a dedicated teammate. Finishing off the regional season, Frank took home 3rd in the girls Longboard division and 5th in girls Shortboard in Capistrano Coast League Finals.
Dominating the Men’s Longboard division, Schroeter continued the SJHHS 11th time winning streak. He has continued to show off his skills throughout the season with a recent win in Capistrano Coast Leage Finals, earning the title of boys Longboard 1st place, League Champ.
With sponsors from Hobie Surf Boards and Quicksilver, Schroeter surfs with the Varsity team and supports fellow Stallion teammates with inspiration.
“We get to surf three days out of the week, and I feel like it’s really easy to get better and better,” said Frank.
Coach Nate Roberts has encouraged this team in early morning practices, hard competition, and technical skill. With the consistency of practices and invested coaching, the Varsity Surf Team will continue to lead with integrity as State Champions.
