Brendan is a senior and in his second year on The Express newspaper staff. He has played on the school’s basketball team since freshman year. In addition to sports and journalism, he loves travel, Scrabble, and his dog. After high school, Brendan wants to study engineering.

Siena Chacon (9), Sydney Segrell (9), Mathias Kristenson (11), and Kaleigh Santmyer (12) watch as their peers are involved in a devastating mock car crash revealing the harsh realities of drunk driving. Siena Chacon witnesses her sister, Sophia Chacon (12), be taken from the crash site in an ambulance to later die in the hospital.

Student actors Anam Faruqi (12), Calista Henson (12), Noah Salviati (12), David Nielson (12), portray witnesses reacting to the two car collision. After calling 9-1-1, the students watched volunteers and officers rescue the accident victims.

Jacky Miller (12) undergoes a sobriety test after causing a collision while under the influence of alcohol. She later is arrested for vehicular manslaughter and received a DUI.

A firefighter uses the jaws of life in order to free Stephen Margaretis (11) from the crashed car in the Every 15 Minutes mock crash program at SJHHS.

A volunteer, who played Stephen’s mom, arrives at the scene of the car crash. She rushes to her son’s paralyzed body, trapped in vehicle #1, screaming with horror after seeing his broken collar bone and femur.

A firefighter listens to Sophia Chacon’s (12) heart at the crash scene; she was later pronounced dead after being rushed to the hospital.

The body of Trent Wood (11) was found dead on arrival and Sophia Chacon (12) was later pronounced dead at the hospital due to cardiac arrest at the mock accident scene. Special effects makeup, applied by registered nurses, gave the actors a more realistic simulation to the consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol.

At the curve on La Pata and Stallion Ridge, teachers gathered before zero period to protest lack of progress in a contract settlement. Another group of teachers gathered before 1st period. The teachers union and the district are entering in another Fact Finding session on January 11th.
