Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) announced on November 19, 2025, that they will work with OpenAI to support the nationwide implementation of ChatGPT for Teachers in kindergarten through grade 12 (K-12). They are one of the first school districts in the country to provide access to this new version of ChatGPT to their staff which can be found here.
“At Capistrano Unified, we believe innovation is essential…This platform gives our team the opportunity to leverage advanced AI to support our mission of student-success and operational excellence, while maintaining a strong commitment to data privacy and security,” said CUSD Chief Technology Officer Stephanie Avera.
OpenAi is a research and deployment company that develops advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems and strives to ensure that general AI benefits humanity. They have several well-known products such as ChatGPT, a powerful AI chatbot, and DALL-E which creates original images and art from described prompts.
“Our commitment to modern education goes beyond supporting students. In CUSD, we want to empower our teachers and staff with the most influential technology that helps them build curriculum, incorporate new modalities and collaborate with colleagues in a safe, secure way,” said CUSD Superintendent Dr. Chris Brown.Â
This version will be available free to verified U.S. K-12 educators until June 2027. ChatGPT Edu was previously announced for universities to responsibly bring AI to students, faculty, researchers, and campus.Â
“ChatGPT for Teachers brings the power of ChatGPT into a secure workspace with added features for educators and enhanced data privacy and admin controls. ChatGPT for Teachers brings the most helpful tools in ChatGPT, like unlimited GPT-5 messages, web search, image generation, and deep research, into a workspace with suggested prompts shared by teachers, tools to work with colleagues, and enhanced data privacy, compliance, and security,” said Coordinator, Communications Public Engagement and Marketing at CUSD Jimmy Knodel.
This workplace is designed with education-grade security to protect students’ privacy and ensure that schools meet their compliance obligations with federal regulations such as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Despite these benefits, the rapid implementation of AI may incentivize the overreliance of this tool, potentially eradicating critical thinking skills and creativity. This also promotes students’ plagiarizing and submitting work that is not their own, undermining academic integrity.
Additionally, it allows the ability for teachers to use AI to grade work and create lesson plans. Using AI to grade may give an unfair score that doesn’t accurately reflect the students work, and AI may be limited to understanding content that does not technically follow the given rubric, restricting students’ unique expression.
“July 2025 survey data from the EdWeek Research Center shows that 61% of teachers are using AI-driven tools in their classrooms at least a little, compared with 34% who said the same in December 2023,” according to Education Week Staff Writer, Lauraine Langreo.
AI only knows information that has been inputted and internet data causing systems to generate false information. The messages it produces may not be verifiably factual but sounds plausible, making it an unreliable source.
“A California attorney must pay a $10,000 fine for filing a state court appeal full of fake quotations generated by the artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT,” according to Cal Matters Technology Writer, Khari Johnson.
The increased use of AI also raises concerns over its environmental impact, demanding substantial amounts of energy, water, and carbon dioxide emissions to manufacture systems and generate a single message. The industry of AI is rapidly growing and is currently on an unsustainable path.
“While electricity demands of data centers may be getting the most attention in research literature, the amount of water consumed by these facilities has environmental impacts, as well,” according to MIT News Writer, Adam Zewe.
Not only does AI harm student learning, but contributes significantly to the damage already inflicted on the environment. We are currently advancing to a future where society is shaped by technology, replacing skill, originality, and responsibility. It is vital to adapt to current times, but teachers should focus on methods that engage students and develop skills in ways that AI cannot replicate.
