Cole Henriksen (12) and James Garwood (12) are in a heated competition for a spot on the comedy sports team.

Comedy Sportz is back and tryouts were held in Mrs. Smith’s Room on October first and second.

Most people talk about sports like baseball or football but there are very few sports where talking is the sport. Undoubtedly, very few people would ever think of comedy as a sport. Comedy Sportz is an after school club where students learn how to play improv games and then get together with other schools to see who’s funnier.

The team is advised by ninth grade English teacher Mrs. Smith. She used to be a part of the Comedy Sportz team at Capo Valley High School, and when she transferred to SJHHS five years ago we did not have a team.

“The drama teacher at the time didn’t want to do [Comedy Sportz]. So I said I’ll do it,” said Smith.

This year’s Comedy Sportz team will be led by returning captain Ryan Kerkow(12) and first year captain Melissa Kroe(12).

“My favorite part about Comedy Sportz is just having matches and being able to make people laugh,” said Kerkow.

“It comes with a lot more responsibility, but I think [I’ll] have a lot more pride about being in Comedy Sportz, and I am so glad I get to be so involved with [Comedy Sportz] this year,” said Kroe when asked about her role as a captain for the first time this year.

Comedy Sportz is a great experience for all types of people and it’s a great way for students to let out their inner class clown without getting a referral.
