The SJHHS Surf Team once again shredded the competition by sweeping all five categories in the Capistrano League Coast (CCL) division finals on December 18 and 20.

In other words, the team placed first in Boy’s Longboard (Kevin Skvarna), Boy’s Shortboard (Kolton Sullivan), Bodyboard (Walker Carvalho), Girl’s Longboard (Meg Roh), and Girl’s Shortboard (Gabriella McCormic). The winners were freshmen and sophomores.

This is the first time ever in Capistrano Coast League history that each individual championship per division was won by a single school.

Kevin Skvarna said about the day, “It was perfect, 5-6 foot Salt Creek Point conditions.”

Skvarna, who surfs “goofy foot” on a 9’4 Donald Takayama, was confident going in to the competition but a little nervous too.

“In this contest I was ceded first, so it was mine to lose,” he said. “But if I didn’t mess up I was going to win it, and I do better under pressure.”

Assistant coach, Corey Stough, proudly said, “everyone came together and placed in their heat.”

So far, girls have already claimed the 2013 CCL Team Championship – Girls Overall, but the Boys Overall Team Championship will come down to one last dual meet against Aliso Niguel next week. SJH and AN sit at the top of the division, both currently with a 4-1 record.

The CCL is made up of Aliso Niguel, Capistrano Valley, Tesoro and San Juan Hills High Schools.
