College Proves to be No Sweat For Student Athletes

A total of six SJHHS athletes signed letters of intent to play sports for major colleges and universities on Wednesday.

A signing event was held in the Theatre Conference room where representatives from the colleges witnessed the signing and presented each student with a jersey or sweatshirt.

Justine Bowers signed up for Gardner-Webb University in North Carolina for Volleyball. She volunteers at Laura’s house, a non-profit organization for domestic abuse victims, and also racked up a long bullet list of accomplishments dating back to 2010.

The athletes who signed demonstrated not only great athletic and leadership ability but also high academic standing as well, with GPA’s ranging from 3.2 to 3.8 and multiple semesters on Principal’s Honor Roll.

For girls basketball, Abriana Conklin signed with UC San Diego. She hopes to major in psychology. She also ran track at SJHHS.

Proposing to major in criminal justice Courtney McKeag signed with University of South Carolina, Columbia. Vollyball is her sport, playing both club and SJHHS.

Leading in records for SJHHS softball is Brooke Miko, who signed with Towson University in Maryland. She holds both single season and career records in hits, RBI’s and homeruns.

Mikena Warner is headed to Claremont Mckenna College to study Pre-Law. She is the varsity team captain with four years on the varsity team and has played 9 years of club volleyball. The team is now well into CIF play, winning at home last Thursday and headed for a Saturday playoff game.

For boys volleyball Logan Zotovich has signed with University of California Irvine and has contributed much to the school culture at SJHHS as ASB Online Media Commissioner, Link Crew leader and president of Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
