As Gen Z is growing older, and many of us are about to graduate, it makes sense that we’re feeling sentimental about our childhoods – a simpler time. Ten years brings a natural cycle for nostalgia, which brings us to the surge of 2016 trends that are making a comeback on social media. From music to fashion to pop culture, let’s take a closer look at what’s trending.
One of the most defining shows of Gen Z’s life is Stranger Things, which made its debut in 2016 and had its final season in 2026. Our generation literally grew up with the characters of Stranger Things. We were all introduced to Millie Bobby Brown in 2016 and mesmerized by her character Eleven. Watching this iconic show during the pandemic was a trauma bonding experience for Gen Z.
“I love watching the end of Stranger Things this year as it started 10 years ago which is crazy to think about,” said Alana Cousens (12).
2016 fashion is also making a comeback. Millennial pink with a sunset or salmon twist is everywhere. Track pants and athleisure wear in general is very much making their return. For men, graphic tees and jeans are popular. Teal is another big color which was also huge when we were little. Teal, pink, coral and yellow are very popular this year but in a more soft and mature way.
“I think our generation is so nostalgic about 2016 because we lack a sense of colors. Everyone now wants to be very simple and clean and forget the fun in bright colors,” said Ava Basti (12).
This year the rise of squishies returned to its once former glory. The Nee Doh take over this year had stores placing orders and not receiving stock for months. These little squishes come in bright, fun colors that come in different shapes and styles such as the “Nice Cube” and the “Nice Cream Cone”.
“I love that Nee Dohs are trending right now because it makes me nostalgic for my childhood and squishes,” said Brennan Crisp (12).
Now for the music. Beyonce, Bieber, and Drake were topping the charts in 2016 and Justin just headlined at Coachella after taking a several year break from music. And of course, Beyoncé and Drake are both dropping albums this year. These albums are very anticipated with Beyonce supposedly dropping a rock album as her “act iii” in her recent “act trilogy”. Drake’s new album “ICEMAN” is dropping May 15 and fans all over the world are eagerly awaiting.
Vine, Snapchat, and Instagram were some of the biggest social platforms in 2016. This is still pretty much the case today with the exception of Vine which has been replaced by Tik Tok. With the popularity of Tic Tok, the trend of 2016 nostalgia stemmed from videos using nostalgic songs that gained popularity and the want for a “theme” for the summer which gen z has been wanting since the hype that was “Brat Summer” and the crave for simpler time.
