Hidden behind the busy El Maguey Mexican Restaurant, a secret pizza place quietly sizzles in the heart of San Juan Capistrano.
Almost invisible to the common customer, Lunita’s Pizza, founded by Danny Garcia, is a Detroit style pizza restaurant. That functions on an all text-ordering business, and serving every slice from a hidden back door.
Garcia, who was born and raised in San Juan Capistrano and went to Mission Basilica K–8 and Santa Margarita High School. Starting Lunita’s in February 2021.
“I started Lunita’s Pizza during the pandemic because my other business, Taco Chop, wasn’t doing so well since we do private taco catering and large events were not happening. I was bored and out of work and wanted to do something cool for my community and catering clients,” said owner, Danny Garcia.
Starting out of his garage, Lunita’s quickly turned into a pizza kitchen that included ovens, long tables, and loud music. What began as an Covid project evolved into something much bigger than Garcia thought it would.
Today, Lunita’s operates out of the takeout section of his parents restaurant, El Maguey, right in the busy center of the San Juan Capistrano Mission plaza.
The restaurant runs on a text-only system, making it easier for both him and his customers due to the limited oven space. Customers text their name, order, and pickup time directly to him.
The menu features salads, cheesecake, and a range of Detroit-style pizzas, one being the Sexy Roni, a pepperoni pizza topped with ricotta, basil, and hot honey drizzle. Other flavors of pizzas include Pepperoni, Cheese, Marcherita, Sausage Peppers, as well as specially named ones like the Red Five, the Forbidden Fruit, the Boba Feta, the Luna, the Christina, and the Capistrano.
Lunita’s makes each batch of dough by hand, letting it ferment for at least 48 hours to develop flavor and texture. It’s not only delicious, but healthier for digestion. As well as this, they also use organic Bianco DiNapoli tomatoes, Wisconsin cheese, and local produce whenever possible.
“[Lunita’s] is one of my favorite Friday night treats…me and my family love to support small businesses, especially ones that are so nice in the community,” said Ashlyn Engel (11).
Students like this, as well as the entire San Juan community, are drawn to the secretive vibe of the shop. With there being no obvious sign, storefront, or a traditional ordering system, Lunita’s grew through a popular word-of-mouth reputation.
Groups like the OC Firefighters, as well as other businesses like the Brew House, all appreciate the hidden gem that serves everyone’s tastebuds. They are especially popular during holidays, with certain specials or deals that they provide, and also as catering fun events.
On the normal weeks of Wednesday through Sunday though, customers pick up through a small side entrance on the quieter side of El Maguey.
