Have you ever wanted to get involved in the community? Have a love for horses or children? Need volunteering hours? Then the Shea Center is the place for you! The Shae Center is an organization for disabled children that provides therapeutic horse back riding programs. Children with disabilities that range from cerebral palsy to autism experience life changing therapy through the emotional connection, and tons of benefits physically. The hip motion that a horse creates while walking is uncreatable by man or machine. Giving even children who haven’t ever walked a chance to work different muscles and grow stronger. Also, forcing them to sit up, hold reins, and keep their head up is very beneficial. I personally have volunteered 200 hours plus at the Shae Center and I can honestly say it has changed my own life. Watching children born with a disability that most of us don’t have to overcome and will never be considered “normal” by society be so happy and thrive and accomplish goals made me grateful in so many ways. “The kids here know that when you volunteer here your there to help them and seeing them smile in return is a reward all itself,” said Cheryl Chrisman a staff member at the Shae Center. No matter if you have no experiences with children or horses, you are welcome to volunteer. Volunteers can either walk along and support the child physically as he or she rides, this is called sidewalking. Or, if you have experiences with horses you could lead the horses around while the child rides. Its a great way to spend time and gain people skills and responsibility as well as confidence. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, as well as have a great time doing it.
