Spring break is a time full of fun and sun, for some even art! Over spring break the students from AP Art History reaped the benefits of their hard work and traveled to Italy as a class. From museums to gelato, AP Art students were able to experience both the city and its art they’ve worked so diligently in learning.
“It was crazy seeing the art pieces we studied. Seeing them in person instead of on a screen, you can see the actual dimensions and how big they are – it was insane,” said Ella Verde (12).
AP Art History’s curriculum explores 250 diverse works of art from prehistory to present. It focuses on contextual, visual, and comparative analysis. Using color, positioning, and lighting in order to analyze and interpret hidden meaning in art.
“We did have free time, so we could, like, we had free time around, like, meals, so we could, like, go where we wanted to and eat and chill,” said Drew Brasch (12).
A week long trip full of sight seeing, learning, as well as bonding. The daily schedule consisted of breakfast at 7 AM, and exploring the cities from 8 AM to 11 PM. Students were able to explore cities such as Florence, Rome, Tuscany, and Assisi.
“I got close with a lot of people I didn’t think I would be close with. And the food was really good, like really, really good,” said Verde.
In the AP curriculum students learn about eras like the Renaissance, which focuses on balance, realism, and science. Students got to witness the art they learned at museums like, Palazzo Massimo Alle Terme, Museo Nazionale Del Bargello and the Uffizi Galleries.
While the trip had many educational opportunities students were able to enjoy the city and partake in leisure activities such as shopping at the flea markets, trying new food, and overall wandering around the beautiful cities.
The AP Art History Italy trip is a memorable way for students grade 10-12 to make memories with their classmates as well as a great opportunity to see what they learned in real life.
