Today, April 16, Meg Roh, freshman at SJHHS, completed her 1,040th straight day of surfing.

A journey where the motivation was only to surf everyday for one summer, turned into a goal to surf for three years straight.

Roh first started surfing when she was four-years-old, but decided she wanted to surf everyday when she was 12 years-old. She started surfing everyday that summer, and got the idea to start surfing for one year, which turned into 500 days, which then turned into two years. She then made the final decision to surf for three years.

Now at the age of 15, she has completed over 1,040 days of surfing, and has no desire to stop there. In order to complete the whole three years, she will have to surf a total of 1,096 days. That’s will be on June 1 — a Sunday.

At the beginning of the journey, she only surfed for fun, but eventually got a sponsorship from Roxy, Daphne’s, and Sticky Bumps.

“I never wanted to quit. Everyday I surf I get more and more stoked,” says Roh about her dedication to finish. “My biggest supporters would have to be my mom, my dad and my stepdad. Definitely the the surf team as well, and the people I surf with a lot.”

Using her 9’0” Timmy Patterson Noserider, she completes her goal with only one bump in the road. After a surf trip to La Saladita, Mexico, Roh almost missed a chance to surf. A trip that was suppose to help her surf everyday almost caused her goal to be shattered. Due to the time change, Meg didn’t come home until late. They had the airport shuttle drop them off at Doheny, in the dark, to get in one days worth of surfing.

Although the trip home may have been stressful, her favorite memory would be taking the trip to Mexico and surfing everyday. And with great waves, surfing everyday wasn’t a hard task.

“My parents inspire me to work harder. And my biggest surf inspiration is Kelia Moniz,” says Roh. Kelia Moniz is a professional longboarder from Hawaii.

Once she’s done with her three year expedition, Meg wants to travel and surf in different locations. She doesn’t know where she wants to travel, but she wants to go somewhere where she can surf.
