Republicans vs. Democrats

Who are Republicans and Democrats and what are their differences?

The Democratic party is generally considered liberal meaning its members are open to new ideas, seek greater freedoms, and want to protect Americans’ civil rights (Britannica). 

The Republican Party is viewed as conservative meaning its members hold traditional values, want to lower the cost of living, and veer away from change or innovations (Britannica). 

Each party desires different things for the United States.  

The Democratic Party favors a progressive tax to finance the government’s expanded role in economic issues, backing regulations and social welfare programs (Britannica).

The Republican Party typically wants the government to be less involved in the economy in support of lower taxes for all. However, Republicans support a large budget for the military, and they often pursue U.S. national security interests (Britannica). 

The 2024 presidential election has been a fiery one. Each candidate representing each party has told the American people what their plan is to help the United States grow as a nation. 

Vice President Kamala Harris, who represents the Democratic Party, gave her closing argument speech at the Ellipse in Washington DC on October 30.

“I will make sure you have a chance not just to get by but to get ahead because I believe in honoring the dignity of work,” said Harris

On the opposing side, the Republican Party, former president Donald J. Trump gave a speech at his rally in Madison Square Garden in New York City on October 27. 

“We will cut your taxes and inflation, slash your prices, raise your wages, and bring thousands and thousands of factories back to America,” said Trump. 

Each candidate has a different approach and both of them are appealing to Americans. 

While each part stands for different things and has different values, without one or the other, there would not be balance. Therefore, both Democrats and Republicans are equally important.

This presidential election has been quite a rollercoaster of events. On November 5, the next president of the United States will be elected. May the best candidate win.

In the final week of April the United States Census Bureau finally released congressional configuration numbers. The map above shows which states gained and lost seats in the House of Representatives. It is apparent from the map that the southern and western United States are gaining population while the midwest and northeast are both losing population.
Congressional Realignment Released For Next Decade, California Down a Seat
The graph breaks down where all of the $1.9 trillion, or more accurately $1.941 trillion, is going. The money for unemployment benefits includes expanding a child tax credit, extension of unemployment programs till August, expansion of paid sick leave, and employee retention credit. Money for local and state governments will be to help state and local governments recover financially from losses suffered from the pandemic and paid Covid leave for federal workers. Funding spent on education and labor includes funding to get schools and universities open in-person sooner and extension of nutrition assistance. Money for vaccines and Medicaid will be spent on increasing spending for testing and contract tracing, increases investments for the public health workforce, and increases Medicaid payments to states. The infrastructure projects are meant to create jobs and improve transportation infrastructure. Aid for small businesses will be for providing grants to restaurants and bars that lost revenue during the pandemic, additional EIDL grants, and allowing for more PPP loans. The spending on veterans will be for providing health care services and copays for veterans and to fund training assistance programs for veterans. Agricultural funding will be spent on increasing nutrition assistance, testing for Covid in rural areas, and paying off loans for socially disadvantaged farmers.

On Tuesday March 9th Katrina Foley became the first Democratic woman elected to the Orange County Board of Supervisors. She will represent supervisorial district two, which inclues coastal cities of northern Orange County such as Hunnington Beach, Costa Mesa, Newport Beach, and parts of Santa Ana.

Every 10 years congressional and local legislative districts and redrawn following the census. In an area as densely populated as Orange County, this can lead to uncertainty over who one’s next Congressional representative will be.

Audrey Tillotson is a senior at San Juan Hills High School and this is her first year in Newspaper. She is on the varsity girls’ soccer team and she wants to continue to play soccer in college. She joined The Express to grow her writing skills, public speaking abilities, collaboration skills, and critical thinking. This year, she wants to write about sports and interesting events going on in the world that students can relate to or find interesting or even inspiring. She enjoys playing soccer, going to the beach, spending time with family and friends, collecting sea glass, and learning new things. Her dream is to become a psychologist to help people overcome mental challenges. Audrey hopes to make a positive impact on The Express this year and continue to develop solid writing skills.
