Graphic depicts the Mental Health Awareness week that SJHHS will be putting on. The event will be taking place Tuesday April 30th until Friday May 3, hosting various activities everyone is welcome to attend.

With Mental Health Month coming in May, the school is putting on a week full of activities dedicated to spread awareness.

The week starts off with the grand opening of the Wellness Center located in the Guidance Office. During lunch, free yummy treats will be given to those who want to visit and take a look around.

Throughout the week the morning announcements will explain short beneficial facts about mental health. There will be a Mental Health Fair during lunch in the upper quad with numerous professionals, so be sure to come with questions. Whether it be on how to promote a better mental well being or how to be an advocate on this topic.

Make sure to wear green on Wednesday as it symbolizes the importance of awareness and education towards mental health. If you need help looking for an outfit, check out these shirts sent by the administration to gain ideas and show support.

Green was first established as the color to represent mental health awareness in 2007 by The National Federation of Families in their Annual Green Ribbon Campaign. During the 1800s, green was originally used to characterize people and label them as “insane”. Now, this color is reborn to stand up to discrimination signifying acceptance and aid to all of those walking with mental health.

As the rising youth, many of us do go through a period of struggle and negative feelings, as it is part of life. “In 2021, more than 4 in 10 (42%) students felt persistently sad or hopeless and nearly one-third (29%) experienced poor mental health,” reported the CDC on concerns about the health of high school students.

Mental health is a topic that affects us all, yet it is often shrouded in silence and stigma.

From academic pressure, to social media influence, and personal challenges, this week can be seen as a reminder that you are always seen and heard. That there is always someone there to help, to get better in a safe and healthy way is always an option.

Both physical and mental health are a priority. Seeking help is always important as it is a sign of strength, never a weakness.

By providing resources and encouraging open conversations our school is able to foster a culture of compassion and understanding.
