Females are enrolling in more AP classes than males at SJHHS, according to AP data made available to The Express.

For the 2016-17 school year, 60.5% of females in grades 10-12 are enrolled in at least one AP class, while only 47.2% of male students are enrolled in at least one AP course.

“Boy’s are scared to step it up academically,” said AP Government and Economics teacher Bill Kaiser.

Looking at the ethnic backgrounds of different individuals enrolled in AP classes, the information reveales that female students still take the lead.

87% of non-hispanic females are enrolled in AP courses while only 68.3% of non hispanic males are enrolled in AP courses. When looking at only hispanic or latino statistics, 59.2% of females are enrolled in an AP course and only 46.2% of males are enrolled in an AP course.

Both of these statistics reveal a substantial lead for females who are in an AP classes. Overall, there has been an increased number of students who are taking an AP course in the last four years.

For the 2013-14 school year, 51% of females and 41.6% of males in 10-12 grade were enrolled in an AP course.

The number increased in the following school year. For 2016-17, 60.5% of females and 47.2% of males in 10-12 grade are enrolled in an AP course.

“There is a culture here at San Juan Hills that we push for students to take AP courses even if they aren’t the most academically successful students,” said AP Statistics teacher Tanislado Bracamontes.

Teachers also believe in the supportive system of the school when it comes to academic success.

“We have a culture of making all the curriculum available to all students. Teachers will meet students halfway because they care about their students,” said AP Biology teacher Alexandra Easton.
