America’s Excessive Holiday Spending

Deck the halls with boughs of holly, Fa la la la la, la la la la. Tis the season to be jolly,

Fa la la la la, la la la la. Don we now our money. Over the years Americans keep spending more and more on the holidays.

Forbes Magazine predicted that an average American spent around $750.00 in 2009 and has increased since then. Wondering where all that money goes? Each American spends on average around $431 on family members, and children in 2013 received around $271 worth of gifts.

Some people spend more on themselves during the holidays than on friends! On average, people spend $119 on themselves and $90 on friends.

What’s even crazier is that the US spends over 6.5 billion dollars on Christmas cards. Most people receive 43 cards a year.

1 billion is spent on decking the halls, from lights, to the semi creepy Santa’s sitting on your mantle, and the snow globes with the catchy songs.

To keep our stomachs full this Holiday 22 million turkeys will be stuffed, and 1.7 billion will be spent on candy canes. Santa shaped chocolate will cost around 20 million this year.

If Americans cut down on what they’re spending, they could feed a whole village in Africa or donate money to children in need. Americans could donate 300 billion worth of toys to Toys For Tots or other toy charities.
