Advanced Placement Studio Arts was added this year upon encouragement from last year’s Drawing and Painting students. Now, it’s a big hit among the school’s more creative students. As a new course, there is a lot to know about the new media class.

Last year, a small group of art students including Grace Daigneault proposed a more open-ended class for the more independent artists in the creative classes. From this idea, came the debut of AP Studio Arts, a class similar to Art & Drawing in media and subject, but much more open to idea and interpretation in order to fulfill the guidelines of a prompt.

“[Students] usually do a subject such as 3D art, humans, or landscapes. Each student is allowed to do what they want to show different forms of that subject” says Daigneault. “The point of AP Art is to develop your own portfolio for college use.”

Essentially, the class helps prepare students who wish to go on into a media career prepare for college and assists in bulking up a skill set for their future in fine arts by guiding students without giving them a clear prompt.

Aside from the practical aspects of the class, artists enjoy learning from Ms. Colt. “I feel that Ms. Colt is very encouraging and wants students to develop on their own,” Grace says, while recognizing that she is still there to assist or give helpful tips.

Students have fun expressing themselves in AP Studio Art, keeping a light-hearted yet professional attitude towards their work. Only one year can be spent in this class, and their is a senior priority. As the course gains popularity, it is also rapidly losing availability, due to its large appeal amidst the expanding creative community at SJHHS.
