Not Your Ordinary Fight Club

The first rule about fight club, is you don’t talk about fight club. Unless you’re in Fight Club at SJHHS. Fight Club is out to fight cancer, not people.

“It just popped up in my head one day. I thought it would be kind of catchy and humorous,” says Hailey Groover, club president. This Fight Club is not your ordinary fight club.

It’s one of the new clubs this year and helps support people fighting cancer, but more specifically children fighting leukemia. Groover was motivated to create this club because her childhood friend, Saylor Voris, was diagnosed with leukemia this past September.

Groover says, “Everyone was really devastated once we heard the news. Instantly I wanted to do something to help her and others with cancer.”

This club is very active in making the children smile. They make posters and send cards for any occasion to support them.

“We make posters for the kids for sanitary reasons instead of hands-on things. We want to do anything to make the children smile but keep them safe,” says Groover.

Club members are motivated to grow the club. Groover says she wants to make bead bracelets with the club name on it to advertise the cause. Groover and the club’s vice president, Emma Giles, plan to fundraise and donate the money to area hospitals.

Groover says, “Our club is starting to grow. And they all know someone who has cancer. They are all willing to help and support their friends and others fight.”

Fight Club meets every other Friday in Mrs. Oldroyd’s classroom (C08). The next meeting is on Jan. 21 during lunch. On the agenda, they will discuss upcoming fundraising plans and the upcoming multicultural fair.
