Safe Rides Saves Lives
Beep, beep. Help is on the way. No need for angry parents, a wrecked car, or worse: injuries or death of a friends. A helpful hot-line is only a phone call away to save your life. Safe Rides Club is back (for the second time) to rescue teens under the influence or in dangerous situations.
“This club is students helping other students. We want to help our peers be safe and prevent harmful and tragic situations so that they get home safely,” said Claire Taylor, Club President.
Safe Rides’ goal is to help teens in danger of getting into a tragic accident while driving. This club is funded and run by Mission Hospital. Every week on Tuesday, Safe Rides meets up to discuss previous and upcoming events they’ve just finished or are about to begin. Every Friday and Saturday they meet at the hospital from 9:30pm-1:30am. During these shifts they wait for calls from students under the influence in need of a ride home.
“We talk about upcoming and past events at our club meetings, but everything takes place at the hospital when we go out and wait for the calls on Friday and Saturday nights,” said Taylor.
In order to participate in this club and help drive teens in need, you have to undergo the proper training. This training simulates various scenarios that may occur while driving a teen under the influence. When on call to pick someone up, there is a buddy system of a boy and a girl, one in the drivers seat and one in the passengers seat.
About 15 people are stationed at the hospital every Friday and Saturday. Adult supervision is required, but they are not allowed to transport impaired students. The only people that are allowed to transport are teen club members.
There are three positions to assist in retrieving an impaired student: the dispatcher, the driver, and the navigator. When a youth calls the Safe Rides hot-line, the dispatcher collects all their information of their location and they will send a driver and a navigator to pick up the student and take them home.
The first Safe Rides shift is on November 23rd from 9:30pm-1:30am. All are welcome to attend the next club meeting on November 19th in Mrs. Boggio’s room (H212).
