Using the Osborne Fire Finder, volunteer lookout Bill Kaiser determines azimuth (direction in degrees) and distance from the tower of smoke or lighting downstrikes. This information is radioed to Cleveland National Forest who can deploy ground crews, helicopters or air tankers to fight the fire. The Osborne fire finder was developed in 1914 and still used in towers today.
