Pop Artists Reinvent Themselves with New Albums

2017 has been a revolutionary year for the music industry. The artists we know and love have been coming back with bigger and better hits.

Kesha took us all by surprise in July when she released “Praying”, the first of many songs off of her 2017 album, Rainbow.

This was the first time we have heard from Kesha in almost two years since she collaborated with Zedd and released the song True Colors, but it is her first full album in 5 years.

In this album, Kesha used her song-writing skills as an outlet to deal with her traumatic life experiences. As she dropped the $ from her name, her digitally enhanced, dance-pop style music has also seemed to fade.

“Kesha’s new album is so amazing. She’s a great example for young girls and boys and has shown that there are other ways to deal with obstacles rather than to accept defeat,” said junior Isabelle Bolotin.

Her new pop-rock, country infused album is a refreshing break from the constant hip-hop rap that plays non-stop on the radio.

Kesha isn’t the only one reinventing herself this year; Miley Cyrus also recently released her first album in two years, Younger Now.

After creating one of the most iconic, overplayed songs of 2013, the “We Can’t Stop” singer has been using her platform to fight for equality for vulnerable populations.

Miley took a break from music in 2014 and founded the Happy Hippie Foundation to encourage this generation to fight against injustice, focusing to LGBTQ and homeless youth.

It’s nice to see her doing her own thing and going back to what she’s always known.

In 2015, Miley released her flop of an album, Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz. However,  she has returned to her country roots to create an album to redeem her reputation.

“I really like the direction Miley had taken in terms of the style of her music. I’ve always been a fan of country so it’s nice to see her doing her own thing and going back to what she’s always known,” said student Lauren Precioso.

Younger Now is truly a symbol of what kind of artist Miley aspires to be. Now that she is over the twerking obsessed, drug-induced phase of her life, she uses this album to talk about love, despair, and finding oneself.

Although “Bangerz Miley” is someone we will never forget, the new Miley is doing a great job at finding her place in 2017.

It is artists like these that are continuing to prove music does not have to be revenge at an ex-boyfriend. Music is a way for someone to not only reinvent themselves but to inspire others to be an example and speak out.
