Designated ugly fat friend.

The movie “DUFF” successfully made the perfect comedy for teens. Everyone seems to feel like the story can be related to them in some way.

Mae Whitman takes on the main role as Bianca, a senior girl that is original and spunky. Bianca takes on her new label “DUFF”, and becomes entirely ashamed. The role as a duff in the movie is focusing closely on the anti-hero, which makes for someone who is brave in order stand up to the “mean girls”. Whitman played this roles perfectly, she is an actress that shows her charismatic personality through most her film like in her TV series “Parenthood.”

Wesley, the jock of the school played by Robbie Amell, sees Bianca at a party and screams, “There is my favorite DUFF.” Wesley believes that in no way she should take this label on a personal level, there’s a DUFF in almost every group. They are simply there to make the other friends look even more attractive.

Wesley’s girlfriend, Madison (actress Bella Thorne), drools over his skills on the football team, good looks, and sarcastic but flirtatious personality which is best featured through the scenes of him in the locker room.

Bianca, however, consumes herself with the fact that she is now a DUFF and she starts taking it out on her two friends.

The turning point in the film is when Bianca asks for help from Wesley and, with great excitement, Wesley is ready to “reverse DUFF” her.

This movie is not only filled with humor, but it sends a message most need to seek,

“You need to realize that you are only as awesome as you think you are”

.

“you need to realize that you  are only as awesome as you think you are.”

In an interview on YouTube, both Mae Whitman and Robbie Amell share some of their favorite aspects of the film. Whitman discusses how she loved the fact the film was about the anti hero, and also shares that she had been bullied when she was younger and still sees bullying in Hollywood. She expressed how important it was to her to relay the message that she was once in this position, but things do get better.

Whitman and Amell both loved the script because it had humor but the message was still very serious.

Amell expressed that he hopes that people never change themselves for anyone, and that they spend time for the people that love who they really are.

The filming captures all of the different actors, not just Bianca. For the viewers this is great aspect of the teen comedy because each viewer can find a character they might to relate to.
