Language Choices Limited

Colleges receive hoards of applications from students that have studied Spanish or French each year.

If a student has studied a unique language, their chance of being accepted increases. Currently at San Juan Hills, students are unable to study a lesser known language that would give them a leg up for college applications.

The minimal opportunities for students at San Juan to learn a language is absurd.

Americans wonder why other countries poke fun at them; it is due to our disregard of other languages and cultures.

Students have the ability to sign up for a summer language course, but many students are not aware of this opportunity or it conflicts with their schedule.

Other schools in the Capo Unified school district offer a variety of languages, such as German, Chinese, ASL, and Japanese.

Students should have the ability to study a language that interests them. A student will not try as hard in a class that does not intrigue them.

SJHHS Junior, Erica Gillis said, “I would like to learn Italian because my family is from there and I would like to be able to speak with them one day.”

America may not be connected to the European continent, but we still do business with other countries. Right now we are fighting in the Middle East. A region that speaks languages such as Farsi and Arabic, but we do not have the opportunity to learn these languages in school.

Learning the previously stated languages can raise a person’s pay grade and job opportunities, especially in political or economic related jobs.

San Juan should be giving students every chance possible to be successful in life. Students need to be learning about other countries and cultures that have an affect on them.
