BIG BROTHER’S WATCHFUL EYE: Flown by ASB’s president, Sanjan Kumar (12), SJHHS’s new aerial companion, the ASB drone, buzzes about Club Rush as it takes in the images of students hurrying from booth to booth. The new drone purchased via Amazon is a technological breakthrough in the CUSD district. It is also being considered by administration for new safety precautions at SJHHS.

Look! Up in the air! Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s ASB’s new drone!

Making it’s official debut at October’s Club Rush, ASB has high expectations for their new technological breakthrough in the CUSD district. However, many wonder still, what even is a drone? As defined by Webster’s Dictionary, a drone is an unmanned aircraft or ship that can navigate autonomously, without human control or beyond line of sight. But for the SJHHS drone, ASB representatives fly it.

According to President Sanjan Kumar (12) and ASB Commissioner of Technology, Griffin Dennen (12), ASB purchased the advanced piece of technology from Amazon.

The two got the idea from ASB camp, and from there it was just a quick order from the online shopping site. It wasn’t exactly a matter of whether or not to get it, but instead whether or not it was possible. Luckily for Kumar and Dennen, acquiring the drone was just that simple, only a click and the drone was on its way to its new welcoming home.

The drone’s purpose remains a mystery to some students at SJHHS. Some believe it to be a way for “Big Brother”, a.k.a. Mr. Ressler, to keep an eye on unwary students during lunch, although cameras are scattered around SJHHS.

However, the drone’s true intention is not to intrude student’s privacy. It’s absolutely harmless, as Kumar and Dennen are the sole flyers of the small copter, and have only the best objective in mind with the remote in hand.

“We can record video and pictures and anything really,” said Kumar. “We can also fly it at games and above dances. We’re even going to give yearbook some pictures of the school from above.”

The drone’s appearance at the Glow Dance led some students to assume that the drone is just for entertainment purposes. However, the drone is actually being considered to contribute to new safety precautions at SJHHS.

“We’re even working with administration to take pictures of the football field to make evacuation plans. The possibilities are limitless,” said Dennen.

SJHHS should feel proud to have gained such a valuable addition to the ASB team. The drone itself is a sign that SJHHS is taking a step in the right direction in the technology dominated age we live in.

“We’re definitely the first school in the CUSD district to get a drone. It’s really going to bring ASB’s production to the next level,” said Dennen.
