Match set, LAUGH! Comedy Sportz is an improvisational comedy that started in 1984 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin by a group of comedians. The club at SJHHS, however, got the idea from the Comedy Sportz club down in Los Angeles.

The L.A. club are professional leagues that adults perform in, to get students involved the L.A. club created a summer camp called ComedySportz High School League.

The ComedySportz High School League is the largest, successful improve training program for students in the country. The league creates an opportunity to empower students and create their own theatre and nourishes the team’s communication skills through improvisation. The League combines showmanship and sportsmanship, it also provides an after-school activity that goes beyond the stage.

The Comedy Sportz club at SJHHS has around four to five students on a team, but each of them have to have different characters. There is no losing or winning, as the home team always takes victory in Comedy Sportz.

Kali Hoffman (12), the manager says, “You shouldn’t be in Comedy Sportz if you want a victory … be in it for a rad time.”

Amanda Rhodes (12) explains how one of the best games this Weekend at Bernie’s, which is a kitchen scene where the players only have a minute to act out when the judge call on them. They have to go fall on the ground and eventually all the team members are dead/ limp and one team member is dragging their bodies all over the stage.

Regardless of how bad or cheesy the acting is, the audience is always laughing and having a good time. You never what’s going to happen or who’s going to be called on since sometimes the Team need inspiration from the audience not just each other. Its essential for the team mates to train themselves to never so no and take everything as a new opportunity.

Even though Capistrano Valley High School is one of our biggest rival Amanda Rhodes (12) and Kaili Hoffman (12) shares that they are the best school to play against, “ They are so nice and don’t boo at us like Laguna’s students section does”.

Both seniors share that there go-to one liner is “Remove mask, raise gun…I have been a undercover cop this whole time..or MOM?”
