The unthinkable has recently happened this week in Orange County…It rained.

It is surprising to see the sun disappear behind the unfamiliar gray clouds and to not be able to see the clear blue skies in California. However, it is even more surprising to see the way in which people in Southern California react to this new weather.

Do people begin to wear heavy winter clothes because they are actually cold, or because they have finally received an excuse to bring out their winter attire?

In California, the weather does not drastically change between seasons as it does in other states so typically people jump on the opportunity to bring out their warmest jackets, coats, boots, and even scarves as soon as the weather reaches below 75 degrees.

This isn’t completely without reason, since it seems as if there was an eternal summer this year, which lasted even throughout the fall seasons. People are excited to finally be able to show off the other half of their wardrobe that has been patiently been waiting in the back of the closet to be worn.

Not everyone feels the need to dress up for the rain because there are many people that are not phased by this weather. But some students can be seen walking around campus wearing jackets that borderline snow jackets.

Although it has finally reached the winter months and Christmas is quickly approaching the temperature is still only around the low 70’s, which doesn’t require winter attire.

Often people from states outside of California criticize Californians for complaining about “cold weather” because in other states it reaches temperatures of below freezing while here it rarely hits even the 50 degrees.

Whether or not California’s reaction to “real weather” is justifiable or not, it is always nice to be able to switch out the tank tops and shorts for jackets and sweatpants.
