Marquee Mystery
Last year, money was raised for the potential of a marquee being built here at SJHHS. For those who don’t know, a marquee is a rooflike projection over the entrance to a theatre, or in this case, on the front of the school. It would show upcoming performances, dances, games and other events.
“The location of the marquee will be on the small island you see when you first enter the school on Vista Montana, at the fork where the student drivers veer to the left and parents bear left to drop off students. Marquee messages would be visible to all students, and I think our participation in school events would dramatically increase from the marquee notices,” said Janet Seymour, PTSA Vice President of Membership and Marquee Committee chair
According to Diane Sage, head of the Parent Teacher Student Association, they were working with CUSD for an acceptable plan on the project and planning on fundraising to hit the amount of money it costs to purchase a marquee, anywhere around $40,000-$50,000, and place it at the the front of the school.
But what ever happened to the money that was raised for the Marquee, is the school even getting one?
In 2013, Seymour had said that “We have raised another $1,623 (after expenses are deducted) this school year [2012-2013], in addition to the initial $13,500 already raised.”
According to principal Tom Ressler, “We weren’t able to get the Corporate sponsorships, and there were lots of hurdles in the way. And there were a lot of questions just in general talking with ASB that it wouldn’t be well received and would be a big distraction.”
Mrs. Valderrama and Mr. Ressler are looking at an alternative type of marquee. “So the plan is to put together all of the donations and potentially place a marquee at the front of the theatre. It would be used for plays, and any other general information. And we are also thinking of placing a second one on the wall right here in the quad. We thought that it being here in the quad, would be the best place for students.” said Ressler.
As of right now, ASB and Mr. Ressler are definite on the idea of placing a marquee at the front of the theatre, and the likelihood of the second one, in the quad, is still undetermined.
