To celebrate school spirit and spark friendly competition between grade levels, SJHHS Associated Student Body (ASB) puts together a spirited week that combines cheers, dress-up days, prizes, games, videos, and points.
Clash of the Classes is a week-long competition between all four grade levels to see who has the most school spirit. This exhilarating event brings together grade levels and commemorates student commitment to the brand.
“No one has the same energy that we do when it comes to Clash. The whole school is decked out in posters and everyone is dressed up. It really helps unify the grades together for one common cause,” said ASB president Carson De Felipo.
This pep rally is a culmination of ASB’s hard work and SJHHS school spirit, so it deserves to be celebrated with enthusiasm from all grade levels.
Because it is their first year at SJHHS, freshmen typically don’t understand how fun Clash Of the Classes can be. This leads to typically low involvement from the freshmen class. To end this cycle here is a guide for freshman success at the coming pep rally.
It is a huge honor for a class to win, and even more so for freshmen. The winning class has a big moment at the end of the second pep rally where everyone cheers and celebrates the victorious class.
“They don’t realize how cool it is to win as freshmen, I know the last freshmen were in first place after one round of the competition, and it was so exciting because it is such an honor for freshmen to win,” said ASB Pep Commissioner, Drew Brash.
The clash of the classes consists of four things; dress-up days, games at break, ASB produced videos, and school spirit. To win Clash, each class must compete in all four things and win the most points. Points come from winning games, dressing on theme, and winning over the panel of judges.
“We have posters all around the school, we have lunchtime activities where you can win points, and we have dress-up days. The class with the most points at the end of the week wins Clash,” said De Felipo.
Compared to other spirit weeks, the Clash of the Classes dress-up days are divided by grade level. When students dress on theme they will be rewarded with a treat at lunch or break.
“Each of the classes has a different dress-up theme. Each day the ASB classes bring an incentive that is typically themed to the dress-up day and hand it out at break to those who are dressed up,” said Brash.
Each day of the week, ASB also holds games where selected members of each grade participate and the winner earns points for their classes.
A big portion of the pep rallies are the videos that each grade level in ASB works together to make. Each of the grades makes their videos with the help of the ASB tech team, which are parodies of songs catered to the different classes.
“The biggest thing is the video. We create a three and a half minute video that includes parodies of songs, relating to the students,” said De Felipo.
SJHHS demonstrates class pride during pep rallies with the rollercoaster. The rollercoaster is a cheer where classes individually stand up, take out their phones, and follow a pattern with their arms in the air as they cheer. This cheer not only shows the passion Stallions have for their school, but also shows ASB how much the students are enjoying their hard work.
The main thing for freshmen to remember is that they should enjoy their first pep rally, and not be afraid to get loud.
“At the pep rally just be hyped. Be excited about the video and be respectful of other classes, but mainly when your video comes on, get loud. It will help you get points and it’s good to have crowd participation,” said De Felipo.
