The girls varsity volleyball team is having their best season yet with a 5-1 record. The program started just four years ago in 2021 and each year, the team has improved.
“We have been progressively getting better and now we’re really good this year,” said Ella Dinnie (12).
The team is Division 1 and plays in the South Coast League against San Clemente, Dana Hills, Aliso Niguel, and Tesoro. The program consists of one JV team and one varsity team. While there is no freshmen-sophomore team right now, there could be one in the future.
“We could use a frosh-soph program too, that would be really cool. We just need a bigger staff to be able to do that,” said Lydia LeVier (10).
Since January, the team has been training at the Lausen Volleyball Courts to prepare for the season and their work has certainly paid off.
Over the past few years, beach volleyball has experienced a surge in popularity and growth. In fact, it just became a CIF sport in the Southern Section in 2022.
“Beach volleyball is one of the fastest growing sports right now,” said Megan Hodges (12).
According to NBC Olympics, “California is undoubtedly the beach volleyball capital of the United States.”
Last year, the team played in a league consisting of eight teams. As a result of the recent growth of beach volleyball, the league was split into two leagues each consisting of five teams. The SJHHS varsity beach volleyball team plays in the higher, more competitive league.
This program is extremely competitive as all of the girls also play in-door volleyball. In fact, the SJHHS girls varsity volleyball team just became South Coast League champions this past Fall.
“We are all super close because we all play indoor together. It’s basically the same team that comes over which is why I think we are pretty good,” said LeVier.
If you are interested in playing on the beach volleyball team, tryouts are in January every year. For more information on the tryouts for the 2025-26 season, contact Head Coach Lori Albright by emailing [email protected].
