The Orange County Athletic Directors Association (OCADA) has recognized SJHHS’s honorees for the “Athletes of Character” award for tennis player Macy McClellan and baseball and football player Jake Vuoso.
The association honors players for their overall performance, sportsmanship, sportsmanship, leadership, and teamwork skills.
OCADA also recognizes coaches for their leadership and team building skills. Two students and two coaches from each school in the Orange County district are chosen annually to receive the awards.
The road to athletic success isn’t an easy path to take. Those who were awarded the “Athletes of Character” role usually started their sport around an early age.
“I started both football and baseball when I was around 5, and then continued both sports in high school,” said Jake Vuoso (12).
Vuoso maintained a solid athletic record, becoming admitted into both varsity football and baseball in his sophomore year and onwards. However, it isn’t all just about hitting the most home runs or scoring touchdowns.
“Humility is a big thing for sure, being humble goes a long way,” said Vuoso.
Vuoso plans to continue baseball in college, already speaking to some schools about his athletic history.
On the other court, Macy McClellan began sports at the age of 5. Originally choosing to play soccer, she eventually transitioned to tennis where she currently plays in highschool.
“It’s definitely not an easy sport, but I eventually fell in love with it because of the competition,” said Macy McClellan (12).
McClellan is honored to have won the award, seeing that her effort in the team has been recognized.
“I could see that my work has really paid off,” said McClellan.
Like every sport, it isn’t just about how many games you win. Traits like character, sportsmanship, and being an overall team player are considered in the Athletes of Character award.
“Keeping up in class and being well-rounded is also important outside of sports,” said McClellan.
McClellan also plans to resume her sport in college. She has already been admitted to Occidental college for her tennis history.
These two athletes are honored to be recognized and are hopeful to continue the Stallion Spirit in their future journeys.
