USA Lacrosse announces the Coaches of the Year for the 2024 season. The selection of coaches from various regions are awarded for representing the core values of lacrosse.
The award’s objective is to honor coaches not solely based on their match outcomes but to give recognition and celebrate their overall performance and contributions throughout the season. They characterize the candidates by their exceptional sportsmanship and their strong and positive relationships within their community.
During the 2023-24 season, the girl’s varsity lacrosse team finished second in the league with a 6-2 record and an overall standing of 17-6. Additionally, they secured second place in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Division 2 Championship, held on May 11, 2024, against JSerra Catholic High School.
Michael Welter has coached for eleven years and has led the San Juan girl’s lacrosse program for several seasons.
He has been a resident of San Clemente for thirty-two years with his wife and has two children who are both graduates from San Juan Hills. When he is not coaching on the field, his job consists of working and selling the various Minute Maid brands.
Coach Welter has been instrumental in shaping the team into a competitive and beloved program at San Juan Hills.
Welter is known for his tactical skills, positive rapport, and relentless drive for improvement. He has built a culture that highlights teamwork, discipline, and hard work. His leadership, work ethic, and commitment to player development have elevated the lacrosse program.
“The important things are to remain true to oneself and to remember that you can only control the controllable,” said Welter.
Under Welter’s guidance, the team has shown discipline, skill, and teamwork, which is reflected in their play at league and tournaments. His coaching philosophy emphasizes mental toughness, physical fitness, and unifying aspects.
Players express their respect for Welter pushing their limits while also maintaining a supportive and motivating environment.
“Coach makes it seem as if it is a second home. He makes practice fun and exciting and says it is his favorite part of the day. Coach pushes us just enough out of our comfort zones so we grow. He cares about us as individuals and not just our abilities,” said Captain Caitlyn Enright.
Welter has instilled strong values in academic performance and personal growth. He often reminds his athletes of the significance of balancing sports and academics. He encourages them to strive and excel in both.
“He wants you to become better, not just for the team, but for yourself. If you’re having a bad day, you can come to talk to him and he’ll listen and understand,” said Captain Sydney Beatty.
The Coach of the Year award is a testament to Welter’s dedication and the expertise he has developed throughout the years. His impact is evident in the San Juan Hills Girls Lacrosse program.
As Coach Welter continues to develop the girl’s lacrosse program at San Juan Hills, he looks forward to the upcoming season.
