For three seasons in a row, the girls basketball team has brought a league title home to The Woodlands.
“We [the team] always had the motivation to win league, we always work really hard and we know what it takes to win league. I think if we all want the same goal, it just ends up happening,” said guard Anna Shreeve (11).
For veteran guards, Aryanna Hudson (12) and Sydney Peterson (12), experience was essential in winning the 2023-24 Sea View League.
“A lot of our league opponents I’ve played against all four years. It’s knowing the scout and knowing tendencies of other players. Senior year, I feel like we knew what we were getting into and how hard we had to work in order to do that this year,” said Peterson.
Some of the Stallions have practiced, set picks, and assisted each other before even playing their first high school game.
“A lot of us [players] have played together for a really long time, since middle school. I think that really helps. We really know our strengths,” said Hudson.
These players who played with one another in their middle school years were on a youth feeder team that is also coached by the current varsity Head Coach, Paul Edwards.
“I think we have a good group of girls, a lot of us have played for a really long time together since middle school. Coach Paul is really great. He’s had a feeder program that we have all played for like almost seven years. A bunch of girls did graduate last year but we still had three of our starters stay for this year, so we were able to do the same thing again,” said Peterson.
All teams have certain aspects that make them difficult to defeat. In eight league games, the Stallions won all but one. Speed was the aspect that made games tough for their opponents.
“Our pace and our speed we play with, nobody can keep up with us for the whole game,” said Hudson.
“We just breakout when the other team least expects it. I think we also have a lot of good ball handlers and shooters on our team,” said Shreeve.
The team boasts a multitude of stand-out players on the court. Currently, Anna Shreeve leads the team in points scored all-time, points per game, assists, and rebounds. In her high school career so far, she has a total of 1279 points scored.
“I would say [it’s] because of my teammates. I wouldn’t be able to get that many points without good teammates passing the ball and having good plays because of my coaches,” said Shreeve.
This league championship is the fifth in program history. Those championships were won in a span of six seasons. It’s safe to say that when next season comes around, the sights of the girls program would be to get a sixth championship.
