Next year, SJHHS will introduce its first skateboarding team. The team will be coached by Briand Parenteau and Licensed Liaison Contractors, and the skateboarding club will be advised by Greg Carlson, according to Carlson, the ROP Silk Screening teacher and volunteered his classroom for club meetings . The club will first be constructed in order to inform future participants to try out the team.
“It’s a reasonable club to have” says Carlson. “I think it will be a positive thing. It falls along the lines of action sports.”
The team will compete in the Orange County Skateboarding League which will begin in October 2013.
The OCSL supports high school and middle school skateboard leagues throughout Orange County.
Tryouts will be held in September. An OCSL adviser will observe skateboarders based of their skills to fill the five minimum- ten maximum positions on the team. Experience is required.
No experience is needed for the club, just a passion for skateboarding and a desire to learn, if you don’t know how to skate.
“I’m interested in the skate team because I’ve skated all my life and if other schools have skate teams, we should too. It give skaters the opportunity to skate at their school.” Says D’Lan Silvers.
Briand Parenteau will receive emails regarding competitions dates, which will most likely happen in October. Each competition will have two categories in which to compete, vert skating, skating in pools and bowls, and classic aerobic skating, involving skills and tricks. Judges will judge each skater on a points system.
