“Track and field attracts the best athletes at a school and gives them the opportunity to compete at an elite level,” says Cat Nolan, girls head coach.
Track and field is a competitive sport, not an alternative P.E. class. Being healthy from it is just a benefit and should not be the reason to join track and field. Tryouts were held mid-January and according to Nolan, the athletes were hard working and showed a lot of promise.
“The high level of excitement and personal dedication to training I have seen so far is a good prediction of our Stallions having a very successful track and field season,” says Nolan.
“Our team is definitely bigger this season, which means a lot more talent. I’m looking forward to my last season here with all the new talent and hopefully it’ll help us place better as a team,” says senior Kylee Vandenberg, returning star athlete.
Something to look forward to this track season is this year being the first that SJHHS has a legitimate training facility to accommodate a track team, not to mention that it is also one of the nicest areas.
“We can actually meet at our own school now and train at an actual track instead of dirt,” says Lexi Shaw, returning senior star athlete. In fact, SJHHS is planning to host a large invitational this upcoming year, where 30+ different teams will compete.
In addition to the predicament of a successful track season and the new official training facility, this year’s track team will also have returning star athletes that hold school records such as Kylee Vandenberg, Lexi Shaw, and Spencer Danner. Making it to CIF is a target for such athletes and others. Practice is never limited; it is continuous throughout the week after school, the weekend, and even at track meets.
“We have talented girls and guys on the track team so I think we’ll place well in league,” says Shaw. The first ever track and field home meet is March 20 after school against Aliso Niguel.
“At meets, everyone cheers, it’s a good environment and everyone is the best they can be,” says Shaw. With all the new talent, returning athletes, and the brand new training facility, track and field definitely has a promising season.
