Although not considered legitimate sports here at SJHHS, there are a few clubs here on campus that promote physical activity. Of these clubs include the Geocaching club, Equestrian club, Spirit Riders, Comedy Sportz, and Teens 4 Troops.
Geocaching, for example, is a high-tech treasure hunting game. In order to find a treasure, one may need to hike, swim, or even catch a plane to reach and obtain their treasure. Treasures are found in containers, either plastic or as interesting as military ammo cans. The treasures can vary from ancient coins to modern items but most containers have logbooks where one writes their name to prove they found the object.
President of the equestrian club, Paige Donaldson, says “everyone is welcome, if you’re interested in learning or if you compete. We have great referrals to trainers.” There are two types of riding: Western and English. Western includes barrel racing and rodeo while English includes show jumping, just as seen on the corner of Ortega and La Pata.
The equestrian club plans to ride together at the Swallows Day Parade this upcoming year alongside with the cheerleaders in support of SJHHS and promotion of their club. Members may either ride their horse, rent a horse, or walk while carrying signs.
In addition to activities such as the ones done in the Swallows Day Parade, the equestrian club also enjoys trail rides together. The spirit riders club works to rally up members with the purpose of creating all sorts of chants to pump up Stallion fans at games.
According to the Spirit rider president, Logan Zotovich, they are currently coming up with t-shirts that have team player’s faces printed on them and “other funny things like that.” Comedy Sportz is an improv comedy competition made up of two teams with eight players in each. The Comedy Sportz club does have an audition process but meets every Tuesday to practice games that they will do in a match.
Suggestions are given by the crowd and then scenes or games are played based on those suggestions. A referee may call out “brown bag fouls” which is when one has to wear a brown bag over their head from saying something inappropriate or “broners” which is when one makes a bad joke.
Another club beginning to get physical is the Teens 4 Troops club, which has participated in a 5k fun run on 9/11 in Ladera Ranch. This charity run was in memorium of both past and current soldiers. Clubs here at SJHHS are highly encouraged to become active either by lending a helping hand to the community or having fun.
