After numerous years of having a short supply of team members, Coach Dan Newberry has resuscitated the SJHHS girls’ water polo team this season. Our team is now considerably stronger than previous years as it has gained 13 new players and a brand new swimming pool.
Newberry coached for Capo Valley High School for about ten years before he switched to SJHHS when he heard we needed a program. “I feel like he’s really built the program. He took nothing and turned it to something. When I started we had only six girls and now we have nineteen. He’s just taking it day by day making us better,” said Zoe Zax, goalie for varsity. “He’s a good guy. He’s tough on us but that’s the thing that’s building character and I think that’s necessary for a coach to have otherwise the team would not listen” said Cambria Greer, a freshman on the varsity team.
Our newly paved swimming pool has also served as a great asset to our program by giving our team a close, beautiful place to practice and hold matches. “It’s cleaner than a lot of other pools,” said Alondra Arcos. Zax says “It’s cool when other teams come up to our pool to play, they’re like ‘Oh my gosh! It’s so nice.’”
This season, our team has more than doubled its number of players and has added a JV team. “We have more freshmen and I think we’ve added two new people to varsity including myself and we have a lot more incoming freshman,” Greer said.
Last year varsity only won two games, however, the team is confident that this season will be far more successful. GIRL says, “We have a lot more girls and we should be better because of the population.” Arcos said they “won a tournament game. It’s hard but we’re doing good.” Zax also said “I think we’re going to win some games this year. I’m feeling optimistic.”
