SJHHS Surf Team is poised to dominate the Capistrano Coast League finals today and Friday at Salt Creek.
The boys overall record is five wins and one loss, and girls overall record is four wins, one loss, and one tie. The boys and girls both beat Capo twice this season. The boys outmaneuvered them with scores of 52-32 and 53-21 and the girls racked up scores of 23-18 and 24-17 in those contests.
The team practices three times a week during first period in San Clemente at 204. The contests this week will take place at Salt Creek.
“Our team is extremely solid right now, both boys and girls. There is a lot of young talent that seems promising,” said Nate Roberts, surf coach, “I expect a strong finish in league.”
The team is separated into boys longboard, boys shortboard, bodyboard, and girls surf. The practices take place during first period and replace P.E. in the student’s schedule.
“We’re doing really well. This will be our best year,” said Connor Devaney, senior.
When the surf is poor, they swim in the ocean. When it is rained out (increasing levels of bacteria in the water from runoff) the team swim laps in the school pool to stay in shape.
Before contests, they have team dinners where they plan out what they should do in contests. Walker Carvalho, freshmen, said, “I like being out in the water and being with the team.”
Being on surf team requires extensive water knowledge, knowing how the tides affect the waves, and prior surf experience is a plus. Upper body and core strength is needed and can be developed through practice.
Tryouts for surf team require a swim test, to see strength in swimming, a running test, to evaluate physical strength, and on the level of surfing.
SJHHS Surf Team started off their season in October and competed in at least one contest a week.
