SJHHS Surf Team starts off season in October.
With one contest a week through Thanksgiving, it’s no wonder they practice three times a week during first period.
The contest take place at Salt Creek and practice in San Clemente at spot 204.
The team hasn’t lost a contest yet.
“Extremely solid boys and girls. Young talent that seems promising,” says Nate Roberts, surf coach, “I expect to finish strong in league.”
The surf team requires extensive water knowledge, knowing how the tides affect the waves, and prior surf experience.
This is a team sport, not a class and has all levels of a high school team.
The team is separated into boys longboard, boys shortboard, bodyboard, and girls surf.
“We’re doing really well. Will be our best year.” says Connor Devaney, senior.
Other than surfing, the surf team swim laps in the school pool, or in the ocean.
Before contests, they have team dinners, and have to plan out what they should do in contests.
Walker Carvalho, freshmen, says, “ I like being out in the water and being with the team.”
Tryouts for surf team require a swim test, to see your strength in swimming, a running test, to evaluate your physical strength, and you will be judged on your ability to surf.
Incredible upper body strength is also needed.
The surf team will have a great season this year.
