Love in High School, Or Nah?
Believing you are head over heels with someone in high school is absolutely absurd. In high school it’s puppy love, it’s make believe.
Everyone falls into a routine going to school. We spend countless hours on homework, sports, extracurricular activities, part time jobs, and friends.
That routine becomes boring, but little flings and relationships can entertain us and bring a new excitement to our lives.
Many young people declare that they are in love in their high school life, and it’s simply because they have become so wrapped up with one another they begin to lose track of who they are personally. They may start to act like someone they are not, because they want to be accepted by another person and find comfort in a relationship.
These relationships then turn into mind games and immature “I love you” battles because teenagers want to experience a Nicholas Sparks kind of love.
This “love” in high school is not real love, instead it is a way for teenagers to find a confidence boost and happiness from the actions of a significant other.
Whatever happened to being independent or self-motivated? In high school, it is important to have goals for yourself and know where you want to take your life. The distraction of a relationship may hinder an individual’s focus and their future hopes and aspirations.
According to Brandon Gaille, “only 14% of people actually met at school. Meeting through friends or meeting at work were more common ways that couples met and got married.” Gaille reports that less than 2% of people marry their high school sweetheart. The chances of meeting your future spouse in high school is slim to none.
Finding love in high school is definitely not impossible, but a little unrealistic. High school is an extremely stressful time already, finding friends, balancing school work, and applying for college. If you throw love into the mix, it may become extremely overwhelming, especially at the immature age of 16.
High school is an ill advised time in your life to fall into love, You should be making the most of yourself and your memories with friends. It’s important to love yourself before anything else, you should learn to be confident in your own skin.
