Ortega Highway Closure Causes Problems for Students

Josh Armstrong

ALL JAMMED UP: Students and parents were surprised to learn of highway closures timed at the beginning of the school year.

The continuous construction on Ortega Highway has had a negative effect on the traffic flow for the arrival and departure at San Juan Hills High School.

Heavy traffic in the morning has affected the students punctuality. SJHHS’s strict tardy policy involves students getting an automatic lunch detention any time that they arrive late. Many students receive lunch detention daily because of the Ortega Highway closure.

San Juan has had a rush of more than 800 freshman, which does not help the traffic situation.

This ongoing traffic issue will have a drastic toll on the students of SJHHS and also the residents in the area. The constant traffic blocks the way out of resident’s homes.

SJHHS is has one entrance and exit to and from the school, and Ortega entrance closure could add another 10-15 minutes onto pick up or drop off. All of the students that live in San Juan and San Clemente are required to go around and drive down Crown Valley just to get to school every morning. Since we have only been recently established our system of roadways are not fully developed. It’s not sensible to have closed the entrance to Ortega since school has just started, it causes unnecessary and unwanted traffic issues for students and their parents.
