Tyler, the Creator (Tyler Gregory Okonma) is a 21 year old rapper from Los Angeles. He is the leader and also co-founder of Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All. Odd Future, or OFWGKTA, is the collaboration of LA rappers Hodgy Beats, Earl Sweatshirt, Domo Genesis, Mike G, and Tyler, The Creator.
His first album, Bastard, released in 2009, follows his “session” with his therapist, Dr. TC. It features songs such as “French! (feat. Hodgy Beats)” and the title track “Bastard”. Throughout the album Tyler discusses aspects of his life, such as growing up in LA, as well as not knowing his father.
Tyler got most of his fame from the album, Goblin, released in 2010. “Yonkers” was well received and gained a large amount of views on Youtube. From there, it was played on MTV and his audience expanded. “She (feat. Frank Ocean)” was another popular hit off the album, featuring another member of Odd Future and emerging artist, Frank Ocean.
Tyler also won Best New Artist in the MTV Video Music Awards. In the same year, he also won the “Rookie of the Year” and “Must Follow Artist” from the MTV2 Sucker Free Awards.
Despite all of his achievements, many have found fault in the subject matter of his lyrics. Most of his lyrics deal with many sensitive subjects like murder, rape, and other violent themes. Even though his lyrics are meant to aggravate and anger people which is what he achieved.
“I think his lyrics are bad, clearly. But I think people think too much into it. There is one song when he talks about how [his lyrics] don’t mean anything. Like its not as if he’s actually talking about rapping women. He’s actually not gonna do that stuff” said Delany Didier, a fan of Tyler and all of Odd Future.
Rumors say that he is a Satanic, but Tyler is just openly Atheist and likes to criticizes hardcore religious people.
As well as his constant slander of fellow artists such as B.O.B, Bruno Mars, Chris Brown, and Hayley Williams.
Currently, Tyler is performing with Odd Future and is in the process of directing music videos for fellow Odd Future members, Hodgy Beats, Domo Genesis and harcore punk band Trash Talk while working on his upcoming album, Wolf.
