Craigslist, a website that classifies advertisements and allows people to buy and sell things from furniture to human teeth, can be more dangerous than you think. Monthly, Craigslist receives 60 billion page views from people all over the world according to Craiglist.com.
Founder Craig Newmark had originally created the site for personal uses between friends and family, but the site went live in 1996. Hundreds of Craigslist horror stories have surfaced since then, and even a true movie about a “Craigslist killer” came out in 2011.
Lots of teenagers in this day and age use Craigslist as a way to find just about anything to buy and sell, but most do not realize the risks. After making a purchase or sale, what usually happens is the buyer and seller pick a meeting place, exchange money and what is being sold and that is the end of it. In some situations, this could end up very different.
“I didn’t realize the real dangers of Craigslist, but now that I think about it, put in the wrong situation dealing with money, things could end up bad,” said Marcus Williams, freshman when asked about Craigslist and his thoughts on the dangers.
A family was left totally broke after posting an advertisement about a “take what you want” garage sale in Woodstoke, GA. They watched as eighty people forcefully broke into their already foreclosed house and took everything from furniture to clothing.
Illegal objects have also been known to be sold and bought on Craigslist, which is also a way to get into trouble. Craigslist is a valuable tool for buying and selling just about everything but should not be abused.
