Kicking off the new school year, Club Rush introduced new clubs as well as many who were returning for another year.
This year, there are over one hundred clubs on campus, ranging from those about STEM to clubs encouraging kindness. SJHHS has a club that can fulfill anyone’s interests or passions.
Two clubs that made their first appearance this year at SJHHS are the Environmental Club and the Cool 2 Be Kind SJH club.
The Environmental Club helps students learn ways to be sustainable, learn how to live in an eco-friendly environment and stay updated on the news regarding the environment.
Cool 2 Be Kind is a worldwide organization that was made to be a place where students do not tolerate bullying in any form. The goal is to open people’s eyes to the problem of bullying and its effects.
The Environmental Club was started by three stallions; Jack Markel, Emma Gibson, and Grace Schlesinger, who created the club to spread awareness about the earth’s current condition.
“I decided I wanted to start this club because at the end of my junior year, I wanted to make an environmental club to help support our environment and educate students about sustainability,” said Gibson.
Creating or participating in a club as San Juan Hills is a great way to get involved and in this specific club, it helps protect and shape our community.
“I think everyone should have the chance to learn about the environment because it is our home and we only have one Earth and we should protect it,” said Gibson.
A worldwide club comes to SJHHS this year through Addison Thomas. Cool 2 Be Kind or C2BK was started at San Clemente High in 2009, after the death of a student. This club has now grown into a worldwide organization with over 65 chapters, SJHHS adding to the list.
After the tragic death of a fellow student, Thomas felt the urge to give students a place to be able to talk and allow all students to have a place where they feel safe and comfortable here on campus so this can never happen again.
“I wanted to start this club because one of the students at San Juan committed suicide due to bullying and that was a similar thing that happened at San Clemente High School, so I took that initiative,” said Thomas.
Club meetings can greatly differ depending on the club, but this one in particular is there for anyone who needs someone to talk to or someplace to hang out.
“We do a lot of mental health type things and our meetings are centered around mental health so if you’re having a hard day or you’re getting bullied you can come talk to us, or if you want to come hang out you can come talk to us,” said Thomas.
These are just two of the new clubs that participated at Club Rush, along with many old and new clubs.
