T-Shirts Cost ASB $15K in ’13-’14
Free T-Shirts Cost ASB $15,000 in 2014 School Year
“Free” t-shirts for sporting and other school events cost SJHHS ASB over $15,000 in the 2013-14 school year.
Every year, ASB has T-shirt giveaways at big sporting events and dances. Shirts are given out at special events with themes such as neon, white-out, and black-outs.
According to ASB adviser Brooke Valderama, the shirts are handed out to “give back to the students who are attending games and using their ASB cards in that sense…it’s also a good way to get kids to get fired up.”
Shirt giveaways usually include 100 or more shirts for a football game, or 25-50 for a volleyball game, but sometimes they hand out more than expected. Last year, ASB bought and gave out 310 neon shirts. Originally, they only planned on giving out 250 shirts, but the blue roughrider tees were in high demand so ASB ordered another 60 at no cost for the students. They do not sell these shirts to make money.
“It’s kind of exclusive in a way, you have to earn it. You have to be one of those kids waiting in line to be one of the hundred.” said Valderama.
Some students believe they should hand out more shirts at the games.
“I think they should give out more because there is always a bunch of people fighting for [shirts],” said Ben Edwards (9).
Members of ASB will occasionally throw shirts out into the crowd. These are additional shirts, not a part of the hundred that they offer as a promotion.
“My favorite was the pink-out partially because it’s the only one that I got a shirt and because my friends almost ended up with it but I caught it instead,” commented Derek Jones (10).
Whether its at sporting events or pep rallies, ASB’s shirt giveaways stand as an exciting affair for many students.

I think the free t-shirts are an excellent way to build team spirit. However, as a parent I’m concerned at how much ASB is spending. $15,000 for one year for T-shirts is A LOT of money, especially when the article indicates that only around 600 shirts were ordered. I have worked in the imprinted sportswear (t-shirt) industry for 30 years. Custom printed shirts for giveaways, even the small quantities that were indicated, should not cost more than $3-5 a shirt. If anyone is interested in saving money for ASB , I would be more than happy to speak with anyone currently involved in ordering t-shirts for these purposes. Again, I think the t-shirts are a fantastic idea, I’m just concerned about the costs, especially when they seem very high based on my knowledge of the industry. Perhaps I don’t have all the facts, but I would recommend that someone investigate more competitive custom printing options for ASB.
