Starting a Plan For the Future
Throughout the fall, representatives from a variety of universities and colleges will pay a visit to SJHHS. These visits will offer students different choices they may be interested in after graduating.
It is important to have an open mind and consider the various options that colleges and universities provide. Career Guidance Specialist, Ann Bergen, said students “need to know what else is out there. They need a backup for their backup plan.”
Junior and senior year are the most important times for students to be involved in these college conferences offered at SJHHS. Students often panic at the thought of entering college, but these useful sessions will help students plan ahead and guide them to success.
Making the right decision is stressful, but with the help of representatives from universities or colleges, students can easily learn about the different options these schools offer. Most schools provide students with exciting ways to get information about them, and students should make sure to sign up on the university’s contact sheet so they can remain up to date as the application window approaches.
There are several options specifically designed for curious students that want to know more about the schools’ procedures.
Donte Green, a representative from Grand Canyon University, explained the Discover GCU program, and said students can “spend the night in the dorms, get the food you would eat, there’s an event planned for you guys.”
Students can also receive information about the schools’ offered majors.
UC San Diego representative John Huart said “ Biology is our most popular, in the past Biology has been impacted, remember I said engineering was impacted.”
If one would like to bypass college, military representatives will be meeting in the guidance office next week.

And re: GCU, yes, I’ve heard good things too. We’ve got alumni currently attending there from SJH so I’m looking forward to getting more feedback soon. And their admissions rep. loves coming to our campus so I know we are very much on their radar for prospective students.

Great suggestion Mark! I’m on it and will see about getting a commercial pilot out to the Nov 17 Career Fair. In the mean time check out the program at: http://www.orangecoastcollege.edu/academics/divisions/technology/aviation_pilot_training/Pages/default.aspx

Two years ago, my family and I would have never considered a school like Grand Canyon University. However, I have to admit they’re pretty impressive. Campus is gorgeous, students love it there, and the price is amazing. The free Discover trip sold my daughter and we’re excited about being in the GCU family next fall.

How about not going to college or joining the military but seeking out an alternative like learning to fly a plane or helicopter privately to become a commercial pilot – there are thousands of jobs waiting for new pilots all over the world. Aviation is huge. Can we speak on this?
