SJHHS math teacher, Nolan Fossum has just this year added an SAT preparation course to his, already established tutoring business.
“I run a little group called the Math Readiness Group, and we started out by offering summer workshops for students entering AP Calculus,” said Fossum.
Fossum started the Math Readiness Group in 2003, however, he has just currently started providing workshops for not only AP Calculus, but also Accelerated Algebra II Trig and Geometry.
This year will be the first that Fossum provides SAT tutoring.
The SAT Prep Course Format will include two practice tests, five class sessions (90 minutes each) and a review session on the week of the test (also 90 minutes). In the five classes, they will be covering all the topics from all the sections of the SAT. Students also receive a comprehensive workbook. The cost for this is $250.
“I want to do well on the SAT, and I’m not very good at English, so I’m kind of trying to go with my strong point with math and do the best I can with that subject. I also signed up for the SAT II math because some colleges require a subject test. He has review sessions for Algebra II Trig, which I took last year and forgot most of it, so that is helping me too,” said Mikaela Williams, sophomore.
The Math Subject Prep Course Format consists of two practice tests, four class sessions (75 minutes each), and one review session (also 75 minutes). Including review materials, the cost for this is $175.
“I mean there are a lot of other [SAT tutoring courses] out there, but I’m sort of excited to have one that’s local for the kids,” said Fossum.
