New App Works to Combat Bullying
October 7, 2016
Natalie Hampton, a teenager from Sherman Oaks, has created an app called Sit With Us allowing students that have no place to sit to find people who are willing to share their table with them.
Hampton was bullied throughout middle school; she recalls feeling left out and having physical bruises on her body from the torture she endured. In high school she hopes to change the school atmosphere to create a more welcoming feel.
“The worst thing was being treated like an outcast and having to eat lunch alone every day,” said Hampton in an interview with the Today Show.
With Sit With Us, Hampton wants to ensure that all those who have no place to eat lunch are welcomed to eat with friendly faces.
SJHHS has a strict stance on bullying; as a progressive school, making sure that all students feel welcomed and accepted is a top priority.
Since technology plays a significant role in the lives of most teenagers, the worry of cyberbullying has increased over the years. This app allows for technology to be used to help rather than harm, assisting students to find someone who can welcome them to a table at lunch.
Hampton believes this app will reach the many students who are willing to stand up for the ones who feel as if their voice cannot be heard. “I believe each school has a larger number of up-standers,” said Hampton to the Today Show.
Sit With Us has the capability of including people at each school and making them feel welcomed. “It totally helps with kids who need a place to sit at lunch,” read a positive review in the app store.
